CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

Officer Brett Dandridge made his rounds on the east side of Night, going through the motions, more or less, of a typical Saturday afternoon. But what was really typical these days? he had to ask himself. What with a serial killer on the loose and people on edge, this was anything but normal in a town where crimes of violence were relatively rare, except of late. It was up to him and others in the police department to try and allay their fears as much as possible. That began with his girlfriend, Penelope, whom Dandridge didn’t even want to think about becoming the victim of some sick bastard. He and Penelope were both thirty and had a good thing going. No one was going to ruin that. Not if he had anything to say about it.

It was at that moment, as he approached the intersection of Washington Street and Lovane Road in a police cruiser, that Dandridge’s brown-gray eyes homed in on the lanky Latino male who was wobbling across the street, ignoring the flashing Don’t Walk sign. He was in his mid-thirties, dark-haired and dressed in scraggly clothing, as though he’d been living on the streets.

Dandridge considered the BOLO that had been issued for suspected serial killer Gil Ortega. The ex-con and sex offender had been on the run since yesterday after skipping an appointment with his parole officer. That’s him, the voice in the officer’s head screamed, knowing the description lined up perfectly. Right down to the attire. Based on his body language, Dandridge believed that the man was probably stoned out of his mind, potentially making him even more dangerous.

While radioing for backup, Dandridge cut on his siren and made a sharp right turn onto Lovane Road, where Ortega, sensing he was onto him, bolted down the sidewalk like his pants were on fire. Dandridge went after the creep, knowing it was incumbent upon him as an officer of the law (and even as a smart career move) to stay on his tail. If necessary, to keep from losing the suspect, Dandridge was more than willing to apprehend him by any means possible—with or without backup…

Detective Nathan Faraday gazed through the one-way glass into the interrogation room. Seated at a metal table on one side was Gil Ortega, an ex-con and person of interest in the Night Strangler case. He looked disheveled and sullen, surely wishing he was almost anywhere else. Two hours earlier, he had been arrested after being cornered in a backyard and wisely giving up without incident.

On the other side of the table sat Detective Trudy Clawson. Beside her was FBI Special Agent Daryl Hatcher. Both looked anxious and maybe somewhat distracted. Or was he imagining that last part? Faraday had considered questioning Ortega himself, if only to reassert his position as lead local investigator on the case, with Trudy having backed off a bit while she investigated the murder of Jerry Donohue. But the truth was she was probably the best damned interrogator in the department and, as such, this was no time to play police politics.
